Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says the work the Western Cape has done to date on the Covid 19 pandemic is encouraging.
Mkhize spoke on Friday at a news conference broadcast after meeting with Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde and Nomafrench Mbombo, Health MEC, on the province’s readiness to deal with the pandemic.
The Western Cape, alongside Gauteng, recorded the most positive cases of COVID-19 in South Africa.
“In a submission, the provincial department was able to show the accuracy with which it is following the outbreak, as well as the specific areas affected. I’m happy because then we can respond accordingly, ”says Mkhize.
“We now have scientific evidence that the internal transmission of the virus is higher, supporting my point that we are currently experiencing the calm before the storm and that we may see an explosion in cases in the coming weeks,” says Mkhize.
According to him, it is also important that all the provincial departments follow a combined strategy to reduce the social and economic impact of the pandemic.
