Five suspects have been arrested in Pretoria for an alleged Cash in Transit robbery, the successful arrests were the work of a multi-disciplinary team which included the SAPS, Gauteng Metro, CI, and the Hawks.
It has been reported by IOL that South Africa has seen an increase of Cash in Transit robberies and in February alone there has been a heist every day.
“A total of 35 CITs have been recorded in the country since the start of the year, and 21 of these were committed in Gauteng. ” said IOL.
The suspects that have been arrested are alleged to have robbed a security guard that had just collected cash from multiple shops in Thohoyandou. Just as the security guard was entering the vehicle the suspects shot multiple times towards him, this subsequently resulted in a shootout.
One of the guards suffered a gunshot wound and had to be rushed off to a nearby hospital, he later died from the injuries.
In the midst of all the gunfire, the suspects managed to get away with some of the cash from the vehicle.
After the incident, the teams involved carried out thorough investigations and managed to close in on the suspects and later arrest them.
“Wesley Kekana (42), Lawrence Mudau (30), Sebotsa Khauoe (42), Elvin Chauke (34) and Mooketsi Rafube (43) were remanded in custody pending their next appearance in the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court on 09 March 2020.” said Ltnt Col Philani Nkwalase
