Leon van Wyk was elected George’s new mayor on Friday in the Western Cape.
“We congratulate Leon and wish him and the DA team in George all the best,” said Geordin Hill-Lewis, DA election chief in George.
Hill-Lewis says Van Wyk’s election is an important first step in restoring the integrity of George’s municipal council.
“Leon has the integrity, energy and humility that office requires. He will take the lead in attracting investment, growing the local economy and helping to maintain George’s status as one of the best places to live in South Africa. In this way, the municipality will have proper resources to provide services and invest in much-needed infrastructure. “
It was also a historic election. The DA says this is as far as he knows for the first time that a mayor was elected in an online council meeting.
George’s former Mayor Melvin Naik’s DA membership was previously suspended and he could no longer serve as mayor of the town. His removal from office followed a forensic report issued in January that contained findings of corruption, mismanagement and serious malpractice at the George Municipality.
