Nigeria’s Department of Health announced on Twitter early Friday morning that someone in the country had tested positive for the virus. The case was confirmed on Thursday in the state of Lagos, the country’s economic hub.
“This is the first case in Nigeria since the outbreak of the virus in China,” the department writes.
Covid-19 cases were reported in Egypt earlier in February, while Algeria confirmed its first case earlier this week.
Covid-19 broke out in central China in the city of Wuhan in December 2019.
The number of people invected currently is 83,719 and claimed the lives of 2,858 people.
There are currently no cases of the coronavirus confirmed in South Africa.
