A farmer from Vierfontein in the Free State, Japie van den Berg, 50, was attacked by at least five men at his farm gate on Tuesday night.
Police spokesman Motantsi Makhele says Van den Berg was hit with the back of a gun when he wanted to open his farm gate.
The attackers then forced him to his home where they took his pistol and looted the house.
Makhele said the gang tied Van den Berg’s hands and loaded him in the back of his bakkie, after which they drove in the direction of Bothaville.
The attackers left Van den Berg’s bakkie near the Nampo school and fled with the loot in a getaway vehicle waiting for them.
Firearms were apparently stolen from Van den Berg’s safe.
Van den Berg was able to unwind himself at around 1 am on Wednesday morning and walked about 3km to get help.
Makhele says a charge of house robbery is being investigated.
