An amendment bill to amend Article 25 of the Constitution to allow land expropriation without compensation may already be ready before the end of the year.
“We expect the bill to be ready for publication in the Government Gazette by mid-December,” Parliament House Speaker Cedric Frolic said at a press conference on Wednesday. “The public will therefore be available to comment for the rest of January.”
Parliament’s priorities over the next few months were discussed at the press conference.
“Immediately after the deadline, the committee will meet again to consider the public’s input and then hold public hearings in parliament and outside parliament to discuss the views in the written input.”
The National Assembly granted a deadline of March 31 to the ad hoc committee to handle the amendment to complete its work.
