The appointment of André de Ruyter as Eskom’s new CEO was announced on Monday afternoon.
De Ruyter is currently the CEO of the packaging group Nampak.
Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan announced the appointment in a statement. The appointment will take effect on January 15, 2020.
According to the statement, the power provider received 142 applications, eight of which were from Eskom employees, after Phakamani Hadebe resigned as Eskom CEO in July this year. Jabu Mabuza has since taken over as CEO.
De Ruyter has about 20 years of experience as part of senior management at the petrochemical group Sasol. His qualifications include an LLB and an MBA.
“I would like to thank De Ruyter for not only accepting the position in the midst of a difficult time at Eskom, but, given Eskom’s financial condition, also agreed to a lower remuneration package than the position currently pays,” Gordhan said.
