The elderly Anne-Marie Buys, 72, from Krugersdorp was stabbed by a fellow patient at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday morning at 1:45 a.m.
Her family was away when it happened and only found out later.
She died Thursday morning, though it is still uncertain what led to her death. The hospital also couldn’t tell the Buys family exactly what time she died.
Debbie says they are definitely going to take legal action against the hospital and the alleged attacker.
According to her, Anne-Marie was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in April. She was admitted to Helen Joseph Hospital for the first time shortly thereafter.
Debbie says they have complained to the hospital since April about the poor treatment Anne-Marie received, but their complaints fell on deaf ears.
“The hospital just wipes everything under the carpet. We feel relieved that she is dead because now they can get rid of us too, ”says a very upset Debbie.
The complaints were about alleged negligence and included an incident where solid food was served to her, while she could only eat soft food.
According to the family, a patient in the ward told them that Anne-Marie had been attacked by another patient who had a blunt knife to her neck.
“A woman was sitting on me trying to kill me,” Anne-Marie later told her family.
Loekie demanded that his mother’s wound be treated and that she be given pain pills. According to the statement, the nursing staff said they should wait for a doctor and because it was a long weekend, they would only be able to pay proper attention to it on December 17.
