Staff at the Wilhelm Stahl Provincial Hospital in Middelburg in the Eastern Cape decided to protest after Covid-19 was diagnosed with 25 staff members.
According to Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo, hospital management is doing everything in its power to continue operations with a drastically reduced staff base.
“Disinfection is applied directly in the high-risk areas of the hospital and a professional service provider has been approached for this purpose.”
Staff who are still working say the department is not playing open cards about the real state of affairs. “As usual, the hospital is cleaned with water and disinfectant, but no intensive disinfection protocol has been applied. We were even forced to work while waiting for test results and meanwhile, some of those staff members have been confirmed to have Covid-19. ”
