A bus loaded with passengers, mainly pensioners lost control near Centane today, It has been reported that 25 of the passengers on the bus have died and 62 injured after the bus reared off the cliff.
Simon Zwane, Spokesperson for RTMC released a statement saying that the incident occured at 08:00.
The vehicle left Chebe with passengers that were enroute to Butterworth to do some shopping. The vehicle has been reported to be traveling down a gravel road where it swerved and lost control, the bus then slid down the cliff rolling for over 200m before coming to a stop.
The RTMC will now carry out an investigation on the incident and work alongside the Police.
Transport Ministry Statement
The Transport Ministry heard of the incident and Minister Mbalula has said he is “Saddened by the centane bus tragedy”
“To lose so many lives in a single accident is devastating and shocking. I send my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the community of Centane. We are commited to expediting the RTMC investigation and ensure that is concluded speedily. We remain committed to strengthening our measures aimed at ensuring safety of our people on the roads. This includes regular reviews of precedures to ensure vehicle fitness, ensuring that drivers are fit to drive public transport vehicles. We will also continue to ensure that the conditions of our roads, including gravel roads are maintained in a manner that ensures they are safe to drive on” said Minister Mbalula
