Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde asks that the entire province move to level 3.
Winde says the Western Cape health system is ready and it is simply not possible to maintain the level 4 restrictions anywhere in the Western Cape and the rest of the country.
“The economic crisis caused by the restrictions has turned into a life-threatening humanitarian disaster that will only worsen in the coming months,” says Winde.
He points out that the Western Cape’s approach is based on data and evidence with a comprehensive response when an area is identified as a focal point of infections.
Winde says these focal points are not in the entire province or in districts as a whole. It is in certain geographical areas where people live and even only in certain streets.
According to Winde, the Western Cape government’s plan was presented to Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Saturday when he visited the Western Cape. This plan has already been approved by the Cabinet.
Winde says the plan to target certain hot spots is exactly what Ramaphosa announced Wednesday night and the provincial government welcomes it.
