The Democratic Alliance on Friday addressed the Minister of Social Development in court regarding the distribution of food by Non-Profit Organisations. The opposing party was successful and received a verdict that NGOs are now allowed to distribute food and soup kitchens may reopen.

It has been reported that draft regulations were put into place and being enforced 3 weeks ago. The regulations forced soup kitchens and those distributing aid to shut down.

Despite the court postponing the case, in the mean time paper work has been given to allow NGOs to continue with their services.

With the shutdown of soup kitchens, this caused huge shortages of food to those struggling during the pandemic. The DA claim that thousands have suffered hunger and malnutrition due to the strict regulations that were put in place.

Minister Zulu defended the regulations, saying relief needed to be coordinated. This is clearly delusional as her department cannot even properly perform its current function, let alone instantly build a proper distribution network to millions of people.#day57oflockdown

The DA has taken a dig at Minister Zulu and claim that he is “delusional” for defending these regulations. They say that his department struggles to function and to give them the power to create a distribution network is not a good idea.

“The court has ordered Minister Zulu to bring this to the attention of social development officials and provinces to not abuse NGOs.

The Commissioner of police has also been ordered to bring this order to the attention of all police officials.” said the Democratic Alliance.

The DA has scanned and provided the public with the court order and suggested that people should print a copy and take it out with them while they are providing food aid.
