The DA has voiced their opinion on the new regulations that have been put into place and published in the government gazette by Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel.
The new regulations allow certain items of clothing to be purchased under level 4 lockdown.
“The Democratic Alliance (DA) is stunned by the bizarre and extraordinary clothing list that has been gazetted by Trade, Industry and Competition Minister, Ebrahim Patel which seems to have been plucked from Alice in Wonderland.” said Macpherson.
Dean Macpherson, DA Shadow Minister of Trade and Industry has described the new regulations as “frankly mad” and compared them to the 1980’s “Soviet Union” and not a democratic society like South Africa.
Macpherson has described the regulations to be laughable, ridiculous and insulting to South Africans’ intelligence.
“According to the regulations, you can buy shirts so long as they are promoted ‘to be worn under jacket coats and/or knitwear’, which is ridiculous and insulting to South Africans’ intelligence. You may only buy crop bottom pants so long as they worn with boots and leggings, which is just ridiculous, and finally, you can only buy ‘closed toe’ shoes, which is just laughable,” said Macpherson.
The MP went on to describe the regulations to be like a communist state and not something to be expected in a free country like South Africa.
“These regulations are nothing other than the continued paternal obsession by Minister Patel and the ANC to dictate to South Africans what they can and can not do. It is reminiscent of how people were forced to live during the existence of East Germany. It may be acceptable in a communist state but not in a free country like ours.” said Macpherson.
The DA strongly disagree with the regulations put into place and they believe that South Africans’ should be able to buy whatever they like just as long as it is done safely and in line with health protocols.
The DA published in their statement from Macpherson that President Ramaphosa should now step up and sack Patel.
“The President should now step up to the plate and sack Patel without delay. He has been a deadweight on this government during this crisis, lurching from one crisis to another and should finally be put out to pasture before he wrecks any further damage on our economy” said Macpherson.
Minister Patel has become the mad hatter from Alice in Wonderland and should be fired by the President before he does anymore damage to the economy and our freedoms! pic.twitter.com/8Larqcqjog— Dean Macpherson MP 🇿🇦 (@DeanMacpherson) May 13, 2020
