A senior member of parliament is recovering in hospital after being shot in an armed robbery in Midrand on Tuesday afternoon.
DA MP Cameron Mackenzie, 60, was shot in the shoulder. Cameron received surgery and is currently recovering.
He lives in Sandton, Johannesburg.
DA chief whip Natasha Mazzone says the DA is shocked and angry about the incident.
“This attack again shows that not a single South African is safe and everyone is affected by crime,” Mazzone says.
“South Africans live in fear. No place or person is safe. Our economy and people suffer daily because of crime. We call on the South African police to act quickly and arrest those responsible, ”says Mazzone.
She said the incident reminded South Africans that combating crime should be a top priority.
“We must fight crime on behalf of all South Africans so that we can make sure our country is safe and that people no longer have to live in fear.”
Mazzone says the DA supports Mackenzie’s family at this time.
Police did not immediately respond to inquiries about the exact circumstances of the robbery.
