The two DA members who helped to evict the party in the Johannesburg metro last year are no longer members of the party.
They voted for Mayor Geoff Makhubo, an ANC candidate, at a council meeting in December.
According to DA councilor Funzela Ngobeni, the two councilors were referred to the party’s federal legal commission immediately after the council’s meeting on December 11.
“The case was finalized in December and the city manager was notified on December 16 of the termination of the DA membership of the two councilors and the declaration of the two open vacancies,” Ngobeni said.
“It sends a strong message that poor discipline and conduct contrary to our constitution will not be tolerated in the DA.”
A new mayor was voted on December 4, News24 reported earlier. The ANC received 137 votes with its 121 seats, while the DA received 103 seats and 101 votes for its candidate, Musa Novela.
This means the ANC lost more than half plus one vote to take back the metro it lost in the 2016 local government election.
News24 reported the two issues they faced at the council meeting:
• Publicly declares his or her intention to resign and/or publicly declares his or her resignation from the party.
• Being a public representative of the party in a legislative body, in any manner of that legislative body, votes in a manner other than in accordance with a party caucus decision which is consistent with party policy.
