Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old woman who was shot dead during a protest march in Kraaifontein, Cape Town.
The situation in the Bloekombos area in Kraaifontein reached boiling point when angry residents started protesting on Thursday after illegal structures in the area were demolished in accordance with a court order. Tires were set on fire and police were pelted with stones.
Brig. Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa says about 500 people took part in the ongoing protest on Saturday and a delivery vehicle from a company in Old Paarl Road was set on fire.
Some of the protesters reportedly entered the premises.
A 19-year-old woman was hit in the head when someone fired shots and she died at the scene, according to Potelwa.
The protesters then ran away. One of them, a 36-year-old, was hit in the knee by a rubber bullet.
A 62-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night in connection with the incident.
A total of 13 protesters were arrested on charges of public violence. They are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
