In the latest incident of violence against women in Limpopo, a 90-year-old woman and her 60-year-old daughter were killed in a small settlement in the Vhembe district on Sunday night.
Matamela Ramala, 90, and her daughter Martha Ramala, 60, died in a bullet rain when a group of gunmen broke into their home in the Tshilwavhusikhu settlement outside Louis Trichardt.
Brig. Police spokesman Motlafela Mojapelo said four men were arrested for the murders.
He said the men broke a window of the Ramalas’ home at about 9:30 pm on Sunday.
“They fired and fired several shots at the woman and her daughter,” Mojapelo said.
A family member, whose name was withheld for security reasons, escaped unharmed from the home. Mojapelo says nothing was stolen.
Police arrested the men in the early hours of Monday morning. They will appear in the Tshilwavhusikhu Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on murder charges.
The murder of the Ramalas comes shortly after Ntswanano Shishana, 27, was allegedly shot in the head by her friend, Wisani Mothnsi, 30, on Saturday night. Mathonsi then shot himself in the head in the couple’s red Toyota Tazz. A passer-by came across the scene on the Bungeni-Shitachi road outside Louis Trichardt.
Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, MEC for Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, said in a statement that she was concerned about the increase in domestic violence in the province.
Last Sunday, a 42-year-old woman in Mokwakwaila outside Tzaneen allegedly stabbed her 43-year-old man to death with a knife after allegedly trapping him with his mistress.
The woman is in custody and will appear in Lenyenye Magistrate’s Court this week on a charge of murder.
