Residents in the east of Pretoria were warned last week against a spate of armed robberies and house burglaries in the area.
According to the security company Fidelity ADT, there were at least three incidents in Garsfontein in the past week alone.
The incidents also take place mostly during the day.
Leon Muller, regional manager of Fidelity ADT, warned residents to be more vigilant, especially now that segregation regulations have been relaxed and more and more people are returning to work.
“The crime is mostly opportunistic, so if your fence is not safe, criminals will exploit it. If they cannot get into your home, take what they can from your yard or from parked vehicles. Be especially vigilant about vehicles that stop and ring bells and then leave when someone answers. ”
According to the security company, another trend has been tampering with gate motors. This usually happens between 10:00 and 15:00.
Thugs in some cases pick up the gate from the track, or bend the gate open and thus enter the yard. Once inside, the gate is opened and they can enter through the front gate.
“In some cases, we have seen them open the security gate or door with ropes attached to a vehicle,” Muller said.
Residents are warned to make sure their alarms work properly and to be on the lookout when driving around the area. “If you think someone is following you, do not drive into your driveway. Rather drive to your nearest police station, a safe place or somewhere where there is activity. “Remember to only open your gate if you are sure it is safe and to close it again immediately after driving in,” said Muller.
