Three children aged between two and 13 have been raped in Mpumalanga in the past two weeks.
In the latest incident, a 13-year-old girl was raped in Bosbokrand on Thursday night.
She got up to go to an outdoor toilet when she saw two armed men stealing a television from another house on the yard. They grabbed her and dragged and raped in the nearby bushes.
After this, they told her to go back home, where her grandmother still slept.
They went to the police and brought a case of rape and theft, Brig says. Leonard Hlathi, provincial police spokesman, in a statement.
In Barberton, an eight-year-old girl was raped on June 13 in the care center where she lives.
“The girl underwent a medical examination and the rape was confirmed,” says Hlathi.
The 21-year-old man who works at the care center has been arrested and appeared in Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of rape. The case was postponed to June 26 for a formal bail application.
On June 8, two men raped a two-year-old girl in Mashishing (Lydenburg).
According to the statement, the case was reported to the police on June 10 and is being investigated.
Lt. Genl. Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Mondli Zuma strongly condemned the rape and called on the community to help police identify the perpetrators.
