The owner of a popular German restaurant in KwaZulu-Natal was hacked to death with a knife in what police and emergency workers described as a brutal attack.
A man attacked 67-year-old Eduard Neumeister, an Austrian, with a knife last Saturday morning on his property in Balgowan, 70 km outside Durban. Neumeister and his fiancé and partner, Margit Riebler, 62, have been running Edi’s Bratwurst Sausage Restaurant And B&B since 2010.
The murder also provoked widespread overseas reaction after several European newspapers and websites reported on it.
Riebler, who was also attacked, later told police that Neumeister fought fiercely for his life before collapsing.
According to her, the bloodied Neumeister tried to help her a few moments before his death, and despite his serious injuries, diverted the man’s attention when he tried to strangle her.
Riebler then pretended to be dead.
The man then cut Neumeister’s body on the kitchen floor with a knife. A very traumatized Riebler, meanwhile, managed to flee to the road where a motorist helped her to call the police and emergency services.
The attacker has since fled and is still at large. As far as can be determined, nothing was stolen. Paramedics and police said at the scene they had not seen such horrific injuries.
