While the nation is on lockdown, drug traffickers are using the opportunity to move drugs from one province to another. During these times fewer vehicles are on the road which could be working against the criminals.
The call was made that a suspect was about to transport drugs from Gauteng to Newcastle on the 31st March 2020.
The multi-unit team intercepted the suspect on the N11 Road in Ingogo around 19:30. They searched the vehicle and found no incriminating evidence until they searched a “loose compartment”. The secret compartment is where they discovered 3372 mandrax tablets with a street value of R200,000.
The 32-year old man was arrested on the scene for possession of drugs and is due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates Court in the near future.
