A police officer and security guard have been arrested following a break-in at a liquor store in Caledon over the weekend.
Four suspects were arrested in the area of the liquor store on Main Street just after the burglary Sunday, and some of the stolen liquor was recovered.
Brig. Western Cape police spokesperson Novela Potelwa says police investigation led them to a home in the area on Tuesday where they were still recovering from the stolen liquor and arrested a 20-year-old security guard.
“This security guard was the first person to respond to the burglary,” says Potelwa.
After that, a 36-year-old Caledon police officer was arrested for theft and enforcement of the law, Potelwa said.
The security guard and police officer are expected to appear in Caledon Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The other suspects appeared in court on Tuesday and the case was postponed for further investigation and bail applications until April 28.
Potelwa says the suspects remain in custody.
“The Western Cape police undertake to arrest all criminals. Police officers involved in crime will not be spared, ”says Potelwa.
