Police have yet to confirm how many illegal cigarettes have been seized since the beginning of the state of containment due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
Brig. Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo said at the inquiry this weekend.
In the latest incident, police seized illegal cigarettes worth R900 000 on Thursday when three pickup trucks were stopped near the Hluhluwe Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.
According to a police statement, the bins were searched and police found 40 boxes containing 500 packets of cigarettes each.
Three men between the ages of 18 and 54 have been arrested. A 33-year-old man has also been charged with being an illegal immigrant, police say.
The men will soon appear in court on charges of possession of illegal cigarettes.
Lt. Genl. Khombinkosi Jula, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, says the arrest will send a clear message to others who are considering smuggling illegal cigarettes into the province. Several operations are underway to capture all crime in the province, he says.
