A kindergarten was burned down on Friday night in Hangberg, Cape Town after residents struck with police after authorities demolished housing structures because it was believed to have been built illegally.
“My nursery school was burnt down. I informed the police that it was on fire. The police asked me to stay with my family, ”said Liezel Mathews, owner of the Little Angels Educare Center.
A resident of the area who wants to remain anonymous says moods have flared in the area after the red ants broke down structures for a second time.
“What the red ants are doing is wrong. They have been targeting a certain family since last week. The family rebuilt their home on Tuesday after it was demolished, and now the red ants have demolished it again. The community got angry and both the kindergarten and an electricity depot that was under construction were burnt down, ”says the resident.
Col. Andrè Traut confirmed on Saturday that police were investigating a case of public violence.
“No one has been arrested yet,” he says.
He says moods have calmed down in the meanwhile and there was some serenity in the town on Saturday morning.
