A member of the military police appeared briefly with an accomplice in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday on charges of possession of suspected stolen copper cables.
Capt. Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo said in a statement that Siyabonga Mazibuko (48) and Lungisani Hlatshwayo (30) had been arrested after police received information from two suspects selling copper cables from Transnet at a scrap metal yard in Tongaat.
The Preliminary investigation revealed that Mazibuko is a member of the military police and that he used a government vehicle at the time of the crime.”
According to Mhlongo, Mazibuko and Hlatshwayo were charged under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act regarding infrastructure damage.
The suspects are expected to appear in court again on September 8. Both remain in custody until then.
