Just days before the sale of cigarettes become legal, Mthatha police hit a man who sold cigarettes from his car.
The 33-year-old foreign national was stopped at Vulindlela Heights on Tuesday at 09:00 and caught 990 packets of cigarettes in his car.
Capt. Police spokeswoman Dineo Koena said in a statement that police were following information about the man who was arrested. He was fined R10 000 for violating the Disaster Management Act. All the cigarettes in the man’s car were confiscated.
In an unrelated incident, police also arrested a 55-year-old woman in Mthatha on Tuesday for possession of and trafficking in drugs.
According to Koena, the woman was arrested at about 14:00 in a raid in the local Tyumbu settlement. Koena was found in the woman’s possession with an estimated street value of almost R15 000 and Mandrax pills of about R5 200.
The woman will appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court soon.
