A law enforcement officer from the Polokwane Municipality in Limpopo who was run over by a municipal worker at the municipality’s premises in Ladanna about two weeks ago, died of his injuries in hospital on Tuesday morning. Police are now investigating a case of murder.
Brig. Motlafela Mojapelo, police spokesperson, says the deceased officer was identified as the 36-year-old Rassie Smit. He is not 55 years old, as initially indicated by police.
The man was apparently in possession of a dangerous weapon and threatened everyone who came near him.
Some of his colleagues were trying to determine what was going on when he apparently started driving the truck. It was then that he drove around Smit. He hit him several times and drove over him and Smit was seriously injured.
Mojapelo says the motive for the incident is not yet known.
A case of attempted murder was initially filed against Madubanya. According to Mojapelo, the charge has now been changed to murder.
Madubanya’s court case has been adjourned until September 4 when he can apply for bail. He had already appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on August 11.
