A member of the Gauteng provincial legislature was killed in his house in Pretoria North on Wednesday evening.

According to Brig. National police spokesperson Vish Naidoo said Mapiti Matsena was stabbed in the chest with a sharp object in his bedroom in his house in Doornpoort.

He died on the scene.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that one person entered the house and Mr. Matsena attacked. “Apparently nothing was stolen,” Naidoo said in a statement.

The Gauteng provincial legislature has expressed its shock and sadness over the crime.

Matsena was the chair of the portfolio committee on community safety.

“Matsena joined the Gauteng provincial legislature after the national election last year and was appointed chair of the portfolio committee on community safety, and was also a member of the portfolio committee for infrastructure development and property management.

“His death is a great loss for the province, and we call on the authorities to work with the utmost urgency to apprehend the killers.

We would like to express our sincere condolences to his family and thank them for sharing him with us, his friends, the ANC and the entire community of Gauteng. May his soul rest in eternal peace, ”reads the statement.

Matsena was previously a councilor and deputy chairperson of the ANC in the Tshwane metro.

“The national commissioner of the South African Police Service, Genl. “Khehla Sitole, has instructed the provincial management of the Gauteng police to implement the 72-hour activation plan immediately,” said Naidoo.
