A farmer is in serious condition in hospital after he and his wife were attacked by three men in their home on a farm near Brits early this morning.
Three armed men broke open the front door of Pieter (65) and Ann (61) Nel’s house in the Remhoogte area around 2:30 yesterday. They found Pieter in the hallway and shot him in the chest and leg. A fourth man was waiting outside the house.
Then they dragged Pieter to the couple’s bedroom where Ann was lying in bed, and assaulted them. The attackers demanded jewelry and weapons.
According to Gert du Plessis, head of Oostermoed protection services, the men, who spoke English, were not interested in electronic equipment such as TV sets and cell phones.
Du Plessis says Ann escaped from the bedroom during the scuffle and closed the door. As she tried to call for help, the men broke open the door and fled. They robbed a firearm and cellphone.
According to Du Plessis, Ann managed to get hold of a colleague of Pieter who then called the emergency services.
She sustained serious head injuries and was discharged from the hospital after the wounds were treated. Pieter was brought to the Brits Mediclinic in critical condition and later transferred to Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.
