A suspected serial rapist who allegedly made friends with his victims on Facebook and pretended to be a pastor was arrested.
Northwestern police spokeswoman Adéle Myburgh said in a media release Klerksdorp’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses unit, as well as the Provincial Organized Crime Unit, arrested the 30-year-old suspect on Friday.
His name is withheld because he is charged with a sexual offense and has not yet pleaded in court. According to Myburgh, the man on Facebook made friends with a 27-year-old woman. “They also spoke via WhatsApp, after which they agreed to meet at a grocery store in Klerksdorp on Saturday 30 May. He also allegedly presented himself as a pastor. After they met at the store, he apparently took her to an open field behind a local high school. There, he allegedly threatened her with a knife, raped and robbed him of several personal belongings. ”
The suspect also allegedly made friends with a 29-year-old woman in another unrelated incident on Facebook. He also met her at an agreed location near Ventersdorp, after which he allegedly did the same to her as to the Klerksdorp victim: He allegedly took her to an open field, threatened, raped and robbed her with a knife .
“The police are still investigating the case. I cannot rule out the possibility that the suspect was involved in other matters as well, ”Myburgh said.
