The body of an Eastern Cape man was found in his farm shop in the Alexandria district on Saturday afternoon.
The 76-year-old man’s body was found around 6 p.m. A suspect was arrested on Sunday morning in connection with the murder, according to a statement by Doug Stern, Agri Eastern Cape’s president.
The exact circumstances of the murder have not yet been announced.
According to Stern, the local police, role players in rural community safety as well as farmers from the area responded quickly on Saturday afternoon and assisted in the search for possible suspects.
Follow-up work during the evening resulted in some of the stolen goods being recovered and a suspect being identified.
By Sunday around 07:00, the suspect had been arrested about 15km from murder scene.
Stern thanked the local farmers, the police and private security companies for their cooperation.
“Violent crimes affect all communities in our country and the rural communities are no exception.
“But, successes in the form of quick arrests will show criminals that the agricultural communities will work tirelessly with the police and other role players to get them to the pen.”
Capt. Police spokesperson Mali Govender said on Sunday morning that the police would issue a statement soon.
