An ANC councilor of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape on Monday on a charge of attempted murder.
Lunga Nombexeza was arrested on Saturday night after allegedly shooting at a 42-year-old motorist.
“It is alleged that Lukhanyo Mdana was driving a vehicle in Pityana Street in KwaNobuhle at about 23:45 when Nombexeza approached him on foot and started shooting at him,” said Anelisa Ngcakani, provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
“The motive behind the shooting is not known at this stage.”
Mdana apparently drove away quickly and approached police officers, who were on patrol in the area.
“He told the officers what happened. He then took them to the house where Nombexeza went after the alleged shooting. “
Nombexeza was summarily arrested and officers confiscated his firearm.
The case has been adjourned until Friday when he will formally apply for bail. He will remain in custody until then.
