The Department of Correctional Services has already reported 2 190 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus – 1,207 prisoners and 983 correctional officers.
A total of 1 644 of these patients have already recovered from the virus, while 20 have died. So there are currently 523 active cases of Covid-19 right across the country’s 243 correctional centers.
Department spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said in a statement on Friday that another 63 correctional officers had tested positive for Covid-19. A total of 20 officers work in correctional centers in Gauteng, 18 in correctional centers in the Western Cape and 12 in prisons in the Eastern Cape.
These three provinces currently run the most under Covid-19.
Nxumalo said seven other officers had tested positive for Covid-19 in the Free State and the Northern Cape.
Three more cases of correctional officers have since been reported in KwaZulu-Natal, while three officers in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West have contracted the virus.
Only one prisoner in an Eastern Cape jail has tested positive for Covid-19 in the past week.
A total of 25 patients in prison, whether correctional officers or prisoners, recovered from the virus at that time.
