The urgent application of Mmusi Maimane and his movement, One South Africa Movement (Osam), in the Pretoria High Court to close schools was rejected on Wednesday.
Osam said in its application, among other things, that schools are not ready to reopen and should be closed again until pupils’ safety in the coronavirus pandemic can be assured.
The application also regrets the government’s decision to move the restriction from level 4 to level 3. This led to the reopening of the schools.
A full bench of judges ruled that the closure of schools would deprive children of their right to education and could have drastic consequences for their development.
