Two men got caught up in a road traffic accident on the 6th April 2017, Doctor Nkurunziza (45) and Gadusi Wani Matangalo (30) were both traveling with two females when their Honda lost control.
The vehicle swerved off the road on the N2 near Jeffreys Bay and was shortly attended to by a nearby traffic officer. Upon arriving at the scene the officer noticed one of the men unload a “suspicious” package into another vehicle.
The officer informed the Police, they soon responded and began the search of the second vehicle. When they accessed the rear of the vehicle they found 1032 Mandrax tablets which at the time had a reported street value of R61,920.
In total five suspects were arrested, however, after a thorough investigation by Detective Sergeant Nolubabalo Bonase it was discovered that only two of the five were accountable for the crimes.
The two suspects received their convictions back in November 2019 and have recently received their 8-year imprisonment sentences at Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 27th February 2020.
“This sentence is serving as a deterrent to those who are involved in selling illicit drugs. It must be noted that in some instances offenders could even forfeit their houses to the state. Let me also extend my appreciation to the traffic officer for his alertness, and to the investigating officer for her sterling work on the case,” said Brig Lebok.
