Minister of Health, Dr. Zeli Mkhize has announced the latest statistics of COVID-19 in South Africa (Wednesday 20th May).
There have been 505,861 tests conducted, 18003 confirmed cases, 8950 recoveries and 339 deaths.
An increase of 803 confirmed cases and 27 deaths, amongst those deaths is South Africa’s first infant loss.
The Minister has given his condolences to the mother and health workers fighting the pandemic.
“Sadly we have recorded the first neonatal mortality related to COVID-19 this was a 2-day old baby that was born prematurely and therefore had lung difficulties which required ventilation support immediately after birth.”
It has been reported that the mother tested positive for the virus and subsequently her newborn also tested positive.
Western Cape suffers the death of a health care worker today.
“We are also devastated to have registered the death of a health care worker in the Western Cape. When COVID-19 claims the lives of the very people who are the bedrock of the national response, we feel the loss in so many ways”.
