On Monday, the Department of Correctional Services reported an increase in positive cases of Covid-19.

The confirmed number of cases at the department stands at 29.

Department spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said the new cases were reported at the department’s headquarters in Pretoria and at the St Albans Correctional Center in Port Elizabeth. According to him, the process at St Albans continues to detect persons who have been in contact with the infected persons. A total of 34 officers have already been quarantined and the public health service has tested them.

“Direct contacts of the officer at the head office were identified and all measures in this regard were followed. The offices, elevators and other areas have already been disinfected, ”Nxumalo added.

A prisoner at the East London Correctional Center also tested positive, in addition to the three other prisoners reported on Sunday.

“The situation at East London Prison is being monitored and it is important at this stage to complete the testing of all officers and prisoners. We work closely with the Department of Health and other stakeholders to prevent further transmission of the virus. ”
