John Hlangeni, 85, who was involved in the founding of many churches in the Free State, is the first death in the province due to the Covid 19 virus disease.
Provincial health department spokesman Mondli Mvambi said Hlangeni died on Monday at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.
His 81-year-old wife, who was also admitted to hospital due to breathing difficulties, is stable and is being treated in isolation. The family did not want to reveal her name.
Mvambi reiterated that older people and those with underlying disease are more susceptible to the virus.
He says the department is grateful that he was able to explain to the family under what circumstances their loved one died.
Montseng Tsiu, Health MEC, expressed her condolences to Hlangeni’s family and to members of the Global Reconciliation Church, where he served.
“I wish his family the best of luck, as well as those who served him together. He is remembered for the creation of various churches. “
