There are now 545 Covid-19 cases in Gauteng, Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku said at a media conference in Midrand on Sunday afternoon, News24 reports.
Six of these Covid-19 cases are healthcare professionals. According to Masuku, the number of infections may change in the next eight hours. He says there is a major backlog with the test results at private laboratories.
“A total of 15 of the Covid-19 cases have been hospitalized. Six are in state hospitals and nine in private hospitals. One of the patients is in high care, but may soon be moved out of high care,” Masuku said.
The government is currently in the process of tracing the workers and their contacts after health care workers fell ill.
“We are calling on individuals to donate and offer support in the fight against Covid-19. There is a great demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) and we will welcome anyone donating such.
“We acknowledge the support from doctors from all universities in Gauteng. We are recruiting healthcare workers and have not excluded anyone. All who are available should contact the department,” he said.Masuku via News24
This comes right after the Western Cape reported that there are now 310 confirmed cases in the province and the first case in Khayelitsha.
