Nick Bester, the former Comrades champion was severely attacked on Sunday while he was training for the Battle of the Sports event. Due to his injuries, doctors have transferred him to a ‘high-care’ unit for heart patients on Monday.
Bester was admitted to Life Eugène Marais Hospital’s intensive care unit in Pretoria on Sunday morning after his attack, but his condition has deteriorated in the meantime.
Shaun-Nick, the son of Nick Bester has spoken and announced that his father is conscious but in a lot of pain at this stage.
“The doctors called this morning to inform us that they will transfer him to the heart care unit. His body is apparently breaking down his muscles to try to repair the wounds. It causes a lot of stress on his body, ”says Shaun-Nick.
Three attackers came behind Bester and overwhelmed him with their power and started to him over the head with stones. The men managed to tie up Bester and later continuing their assault. Once the attackers had left Bester was left alone in the mountains and had to scuffle himself down on his back before reaching help.
The attack consisted of several stabbings with a knife and blows with stones and fists, this resulted in three broken ribs and a broken cheekbone.
Bester apparently had his firearm with him at the time of the attack, but the attackers assaulted him with it. Shaun-Nick says his father’s cellphone, firearm and bank cards were stolen during the attack. “The attackers forced him to give them his bank card PIN.”
According to Shaun-Nick, the family was shocked by Bester’s attack. Shaun-Nick says he rides that route alone with his bike just about every day. He is a professional mountain biker.
