The Scottburgh Regional Court has given a man six life sentences for the rape of six children – which he also paid a few rands after raping them.
The girls, all aged between six and 11, were all related to the rapist. They also lived in the same neighborhood as the man. The incidents occurred in June 2017 in the Sawoti area, just over 30 km outside Scottburgh.
“He lured them as they walked past his house or played with their friends. After he raped them, he threatened them with a firearm that he kept in his room, “said Natasha Kara, spokeswoman for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Some kids got money, either R2 or R5, after he raped them.”
Kara said the man, whose name was not disclosed, was arrested after someone heard the children talk about the events. They were further questioned about it and the extent of the abuse came to light.
Among other things, a doctor testified about the rape.
In addition to the six life sentences, the man was also jailed for five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm. This sentence is served concurrent with the life sentence.
“I hope the sentence helps stop the spate of sexual offenses in the country. It is also an indication of our ongoing fight against crimes of this nature, ”Adv. Elaine Khuzwayo, KwaZulu-Natal director of public prosecution, said.
