Genl. Police Minister Bheki Cele has announced at least 14 police officers have already died as a result of Covid-19. A total of 1 685 members have tested positive so far.
“The Western Cape followed 1,134 cases by the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. More than 600 officers have already recovered and are back on duty, ”Cele said during a multidisciplinary operation in Soweto.
The operation aims to assess compliance with Covid-19 guidelines during Level 3 of the seclusion period. The operation was one of seven activities in Gauteng on Saturday by members of the South African Police Service, supported by the Johannesburg Metro Police and SA National Defense Force.
Cele believed in the informal settlement that there is compliance in certain parts. However, he warned that some residents still do not regard social distancing in a serious light.
“There is also a non-compliance issue regarding the movement of alcohol. The law says one should drink alcohol at home and not in groups. Groups are still prohibited. “
During the operation, police officers seized alcohol consumed in public spaces and illegally sold cigarettes. Many people were arrested for violating the Disaster Management Act.
