Thieves on Saturday night stole four Communion cups and two church bells from the Roman Catholic Church, Cape Town.
According to father Cecil Dowling, the burglary happened on Saturday between 21:00 and 22:00. He lives in a house on the property and saw the broken window on Sunday morning.
“Initially, I didn’t see it at all, because my attention was focused on getting the church ready for the day’s service. I first saw the brick and glass pieces when I got ready for the first people who would arrive around 7am. ”
At that moment, he didn’t think about theft either. “I only realized this later when I was informed that four Communion cups had been stolen.”
Later, they also discovered that two bells were gone.
One clock is triangular with three smaller clocks, while the other clock has a handle and looks like a cup. All the items were in the room next door where the congregation worshiped.
Dowling said money also disappeared from the church a while ago. Someone who did odd jobs for the church was suspected.
Dowling reported the latest incident to the Steenberg police station. “The chances are zero to recover the stolen goods, as it was probably taken to a scrap yard immediately and disposed of.”
