The family of Mpho Kgoroyagira identified her on Friday morning after the body of the one-year-old girl was found in an open yard in the Jouberton township near Klerksdorp on Thursday.

COL. Northwestern Police Chief Adéle Myburgh confirmed this on Friday morning. Mpho’s body was hidden under a rock and has already begun to decompose.

“According to her 22-year-old mother, she and Mpho were sleeping in her boyfriend’s house when she woke up and saw an unknown man in the room,” Myburgh said.

The man allegedly grabbed Mpho and ran away. A cellphone from the mother’s friend was allegedly stolen during the incident.

About 50 members of the local community, who were searching for the child, found the body at about 10 am on Thursday, near the place where Mpho was abducted.

Lieutenant General. Sello Kwena, North West Police Commissioner, thanked the Jouberton community for their support and assistance in the search for Mpho. He strongly condemned the events and promised the police would work hard to get the criminal responsible for this “senseless murder” behind bars.

Police are investigating a murder case. No one has been arrested yet.
