A couple and their family were traumatized following a Thursday night attack on their farm between Durbanville and Paarl in the Western Cape.
According to the 27-year-old woman, she and her 31-year-old husband were at their residence at about 22:00 on the farm where her father and sister also live. She and her husband were watching television. He got up to close the sliding door and curtains when he saw two men standing at a nearby apartment.
They saw him and started running and jumped through the sliding door.
“My husband was completely caught off guard,” she says. “I was sitting on the sofa.”
Suddenly there were four men with balaclavas armed with firearms and crowbars.
The woman was pulled off the bench and her husband was also attacked. The robbers stole her wedding ring, cellphones, and other items.
She says her husband fell on her and the dogs at one point to protect them and the robbers then stole everything in the house.
Her sister in a nearby apartment heard the screams and cries and came out of her apartment. At first, she thought the couple was fighting and called her sister’s husband’s name and asked what was going on. One of the robbers pointed a firearm at her and she ran to their father’s apartment. He let her in and they locked themselves in the bathroom.
Another neighbor came out to see what was going on and called the police and other help. No one was injured.
According to the woman, the farm watch and other people who came to help were on the scene.
She says this is the first time something like this has happened on the farm. “I’m just so glad none of us got hurt.”
The men fled and have not been arrested yet. Their trail was followed into the Fisantekraal area on Thursday evening, but it started to rain.
Police confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the case is being investigated. No suspects have been arrested yet.
