Another pupil was stabbed to death in Gauteng, the education department confirmed.

Police are currently investigating the incident in which a gr. 10 pupils at Freedom Park Secondary School in Soweto were allegedly stabbed to death by a fellow student on Thursday.

The 14-year-old boy was stabbed to death near his home after school, the department said in a statement. His attacker apparently fled afterwards.

It is the 16th student in Gauteng who has died since the start of the new school year.

In the same statement, Panyaza Lesufi, MEC for the department, expressed shock at a video in which a teacher from Modiri Secondary School assaulted a pupil.

“I am shocked by the footage and would like to remind all teachers that corporal punishment is prohibited under the Constitution and the South African Schools Act.”

The department also refers to 39 pupils from the Lofentse Girls Secondary School in Soweto who were hospitalized on Thursday after eating poisoned cookies. According to the statement, 12 pupils are still in the hospital.
