The ANC has issued an ultimatum to Andile Lungisa to resign as councilor of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro and party member by Wednesday or otherwise face suspension.
The ANC’s task force in the region addressed this ultimatum in a letter to Lungisa on Sunday. In the letter, Lungisa was instructed to submit his resignation within the next 72 hours. The provincial executive committee was also asked to suspend Lungisa’s membership of the party immediately.
This follows last weekend’s special meeting of the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC).
Lungisa is an opponent of Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa and a great ally of Ace Magashule, Secretary-General of the ANC. He sent a letter to the ANC’s top six leaders last week in which he accused Ramaphosa of buying votes in 2017 to win the ANC leadership.
Ramaphosa responded to the allegations over the weekend by saying he would submit to the ANC’s integrity committee.
It has been previously reported that Lungisa was found guilty of assault in 2018. He was convicted in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court after he hit DA councilor Rayno Kayser with a glass cup over the head.
He was sentenced to two years in prison, but appealed against the sentence in the High Court in Makhanda (Grahamstown).
