The government has today Tweeted and released that the restriction on alcohol and tobacco products will remain until the end of lockdown, at this stage when the lockdown ends is unclear but it could be active for some time to come.
Alcohol restrictions will remain in place, the government has collected data which shows “alcohol-related” injuries are on the rise.
“2% of stab-related admissions (a common trauma associated with alcohol use) require admission to the ICU for an average of 5 days”
The motive behind the alcohol ban is to lower alcohol-related injuries and free up space within the healthcare system to treat COVID-19 related symptoms.
Social media users are unsure how accurate the statistics are and many are questioning the data that has been released due to the controversial tobacco ban which has raised eyebrows across South Africa.
The tobacco industry has been battling in the courts for many months to get the restriction removed, during this time the illicit cigarette market has been thriving.
