A man was shot dead in front of his wife in west Pretoria on Sunday after their car crashed and they stopped.
Johan van Staden, chief operating officer of the Hercules Community Policing Forum, says the man and woman and two occupants waited for about an hour along Es’kia Mphahlele Drive near the low-water bridge in Capital Park.
A total of six robbers came from a nearby train track at about 17:45 and wanted to rob the man, whose identity could not be determined, from two cell phones. He was shot dead in the process.
“The man’s wife was very shocked and did not want to speak at the scene,” says Van Staden.
The robbers fled and headed in the direction of the Apies River nearby.
Xander Loubser, spokesman for the Best Care Ambulance Service, says the man died after the ambulance arrived.
According to Van Staden, robbers frequently attack motorists in the area where the incident occurred, especially in the evening.
“It happens a lot in the evenings that robbers break car windows. There have been a few hijackings here and I know of incidents where people were shot, ”says Van Staden.
Brig. Police spokeswoman Mathapelo Peters did not respond to inquiries Monday night.
