962 schools across the country have been vandalized and looted since the beginning of the national lockdown.

In all the incidents, administration buildings and laboratories were targeted and information and communication technology equipment was stolen, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said on Thursday.

She added classrooms was also set on fire.

Motshekga spoke at a news conference where she also outlined the department’s Covid 19 plan for schools.

“I will neglect my duty if I do not express my deep concern about what is happening to our schools,” the minister said.

The Umlazi district in KwaZulu-Natal is one of the worst affected areas with 41 affected schools, Motshekga added.

Food intended for the school nutrition program was also stolen.

According to the minister, the department is concerned, and she is calling on the community to help police arrest the culprits.

Motshekga also welcomed the work of the police to ensure that those responsible for the vandalism and burglaries drive to the pen.
